Forges-les-Eaux Ferro et Aqua

"By iron
and by water

Until the 15th century, Forges lived from the iron extracted from its soil. When the deposits were exhausted, the town developed as a spa thanks to the discovery of ferruginous waters by Nicolas de Moy, governor of Gisors. Forges-les-Bray became Forges-les-Eaux… Recognized as medicinal, the reputation of the waters attracted many “water drinkers”. People came from all over to be cured of sterility, anemia… In 1633, Louis XIII made the trip, later joined by Anne of Austria and Richelieu. The aim was to provide the kingdom of France with an heir. The quest was crowned with success, as after a few visits, the queen gave birth to Louis XIV.

 Its royal character

In the 19th century, with the popularity of sea bathing on the Côte d’Albâtre, Forges-les-Eaux saw the construction of its first spa and Grand Casino, close to the three ferruginous springs (Reinette, Royale and Cardinale). Today, Forges-les-Eaux is no longer classified as a spa, as the benefits of its water are considered too weak.
